Location/Time
The AMC 10 and AMC 12 are both math competitions designed for high school students, serving as the first stage in a series of competitions that can lead to the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), testing their problem-solving skills across the high school math curriculum.
AMC 10
Format: 25-question, 75-minute multiple-choice
Qualification: Students must be in 10th grade and below
Material: Arithmetic, algebra, counting, geometry, number theory, and probability and other secondary school math topics - NO calculus
Difficulty: Moderate
AMC 12
Format: 25-question, 75-minute multiple-choice
Qualification: Students must be in 11th-12th grade
Material: Everything in AMC10 plus trigonometry and precalculus - NO calculus
Difficulty: Moderate-High
The AIME, or American Invitational Mathematics Examination, is considered the second stage in the American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) series, where only the top scorers (~15%) on the AMC 10 or AMC 12 are invited to participate; it serves as a stepping stone to the United States of America Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO) and ultimately, the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), requiring advanced problem-solving skills across various mathematical areas like algebra, geometry, and number theory.
Format: 15 questions to be completed within 3 hours, with each answer being an integer between 0 and 999.
Qualification: Students must achieve a high score on the AMC 10 or AMC 12 to qualify - Cutoffs can be found here.
Material: Everything in AMC12 - NO calculus
Difficulty: High
All AMC 10/12 and AIME competitions at WSHS are taken and proctored here, typically held in the library or miscellaneous classrooms.
AMC 10/12 - Occurs around early and mid-November
AIME - Occurs around mid-February.
